1. How Many Pendants Do I Need And Which Size?
Deciding the size and number of pendants you will need depends on your kitchen island’s length.
As a rule of thumb:
- For Islands < 4 ft: One oversized pendant.
- For Islands between 4 and 6 ft: Two pendants.
- For Islands > 6 ft: Three pendants or two oversized pendants.
The moment you define your island’s length, use this table as a reference and locate the range of pendant diameter and number of pendants you will need.

2. What is the height that I should leave between the pendants and the countertop?
Hang your pendants 30" - 36" from the top of the countertop to the bottom of the pendant’s shade. So it’s going to be 66" - 72" from the floor.
If you have tall family members, adjusting the height accordingly will help creating a safe environment.

3. How Far Apart Should I Place My Pendants?

- Leave 6" - 12" between the edge of the island and the edge of the pendant.
- Leave 24" - 36" between pendants from center to center.
4. Example: 7 ft. Island with Three 16" pendants
There is a quick and easy math behind spacing pendants depending on your island’s length, number of pendants you want to use and the size of each pendant.
Measure the length of your island in inches:
In our example, it’s 7ft
7 ft = 84"
Add up the size and number of pendants you want:
A set of Three 16" pendants
3 x 16" = 48"
Subtract step 2 from the total length of your island:
84 - 48 = 36
Add an imaginary pendant to estimate adequate spacing; we include one additional pendant in the count to account for the space between each pendant and the edges:
Since we are using 3 pendants, if we add one pendant it’s going to be 3 + 1 = 4
We divide the amount that we got in step 3 by the number we have in step 4:
36 / 4 = 9
Now the pendants will be 9 inches apart with 9 inches on both ends.
